Welcome to Oriango.

It is a repository of web content, which allows you to quickly store and share your favorite web links, news, videos, sites, profiles, music, blogs, anything you need. Like most of the other user driven sites, characteristic of Web 2.0, the content on this site is user driven. People submit the content and share it with others. This makes it always updated and informative.

Use of Oriango is extremely easy. It does not require you to register with it. A unique feature of Oriango is that its interface looks like a dictionary, which is familiar even to a child. Users are provided with an easy but powerful search option.

But why Dictionary ? Let’s see what they say…

All the information added to Oriango is arranged alphabetically, as in a dictionary, this way is certain that only the name or the title will matter, allowing independence on their choices. Therefore it’s the user that chooses what is relevant, important or cool, not a group selection, votes or page rank.

Could you get the reasoning ? At least I couldn’t make out much of it.

Although, it is a new site, but it is yet to be seen, how they are going to differentiate themselves in this era of information overload.

Open Office recently pushed 3.0 as a beta release.

It’s a bit slower the 2.4, it’s got a nice new start centre, an icon refresh, a zoom control on the status bar and is now capable of supporting extensions to increase functionality.

Writer’s Tools
If you live in Writer during the day, churning out documents or whatever it is you do then this pack will provide you with all the extra functions and features necessary. There are some pretty useless additions to this set, but some notable tools are:

Test Fonts

Reveal or Reset the Bios Passwords

Password protecting the Bios is considered a weak protection, something that professionals can find out or reset in no time. Besides the obvious possibilities to set a jumper or remove the bios battery to reset the bios password it is also possible to reveal or reset the bios password by using a software like CmosPwd which is available for Windows, DOS and Linux.

Most users will probably run the application in Windows. To do that they need to access the command line and install a driver that gives “direct port I/O access for specified ports to user-mode process (ring 3) using Ke386SetIoAccessMap and Ke386IoSetAccessProcess kernel functions.” The driver is located in the Windows directory of the software package after unzipping it to the computer.

The command ioperm.exe -i is used to install the driver which can be uninstalled with ioperm.exe -u after the bios password has been revealed. Once the driver is installed the bios password can be revealed with the command Cmospwd_win.exe which displays a list similar to the one below.

The application requests the password for all known bioses. Only one hit will be found obviously which in the case of my bios was test in the Award 6.0 line. Reseting the bios can be initiated in DOS with the command cmospwd /k. Please note that the cmospwd.exe file is located in the DOS directory of the application. It can also be reset with the cmospwd_win /k in Windows.

Most notebooks store the bios password in an eeprom which can only be retrieved with an eeprom reader.

URL Link is a very sophisticated add-on for the email client Mozilla Thunderbird that provides advanced link manipulation techniques. The most obvious - and probably common as well - function is to join links that spawn across multiple lines which is often the case when verification emails are send. It also substitutes spaces in links to %20 so that network paths can be followed.

Another excellent feature is the ability to mark text and perform a search or create a link from it. By default Google and Wikipedia are available but the add-on provides access to custom searches as well which can be added in no time in the add-on’s options. Three links can be created from any word that is marked, they lead to www.word.com, www.word.org and www.word.net with the option to add custom extensions like co.uk as well.

Another interesting feature is the option to convert email addresses in the mail body to links. Say someone added a mailto link in the body text of the email. This could be converted into a link to the domain of the email, e.g. from someone@something.com to www.something.com. It can also handle Javascript links.

The option to add custom manipulations is what makes this Thunderbird add-on special. Each function is accessible through the right-click context menu.

In a post last week I talked about the growth of cloud computing and web based applications in relation to online desktops. Today I’ve got some amazing flash powered online tools to show you.

Aviary is a suite of web based creative tools. Each of the tools has been named after some kind of bird, so you’ll have to get used to nearly 20 names like “Phoenix”, “Hawk” and “Raven”.

All of our tools are based right in your browser or as downloadable AIR applications. Our tools all communicate and relate to each other. To illustrate an example: You can import a swatch from Toucan into Phoenix, while doing complex bitmap processing of a 3D object developed in Hummingbird. Finally, you can take your finished artwork and lay it out in Owl as the DVD artwork for a music CD you and your friends put together in Roc and Myna and offer it for sale in our marketplace, Hawk.

Aviary is still very much under development and is strictly in invitation only beta. You can however sign up with the early “early bird invitations” form and specify what type of tools interest you, such as “image editing” or “desktop publishing”.

I actually have no idea how many of these tools are actually completed or at what stage the project is at. I have received an invite to two, “Phoenix” and “Peacock”, an image editor and pattern generator.

All I can say is that these applications are fantastic. They run from the web but act exactly like desktop software. It loaded fast and I experienced no lags or anything to indicate this wasn’t just a normal program running on my computer. Phoenix is fantastic program and almost matches Photoshop for functionality. In fact some of the example images produced are completely comparable to those produced by the commercial application.

When you receive your invitation you’ll get a user account which provides you with a dashboard and a place to save, store and showcase what you have created and a central place you can access all your applications from.

Create Extra Partitions From Unused Space In Windows Vista

Most laptops and desktop factory models come built in with only one drive no matter how huge your hard drive is. This can be pretty annoying when you want to re-format your PC, in those cases you may first have to move all your data to a external drive before performing a fresh install.

Windows Vista has a nice little feature which will allow you to create partitions from unused space without having to use any additional tools or softwares.

Creating partition in Windows Vista is quite easy and you need to follow few simple steps and you will end up with a new partition where you can store your files without having to worry about backing them up when you have to re-format or re-install your operating system.

To create partitions from unused space in Windows Vista follow these simple steps, open Control Panel –> System and Maintenance and scroll down till you see Administrative Tools. From the options available click on create and format hard disk partitions.

Clicking on that will open up a new window where you can see your current hard drives.

In the above screenshot you will see two drives, but that is since I already have partitioned my drive. If you have not you will only one drive usually the C drive. Right click on the drive and select the Shrink drive option.

Once you select the option Windows will start querying the drive to see amount of free drive space available to create partitions.

Once Windows has finished querying the hard drive it will show the amount of space available to shrink in the drive, enter atleast 1-2 GB lesser than the available space to shrink and click on the Shrink button.

The 1-2GB space is to leave a buffer so that nothing goes wrong while creating the new partition. Give the process some time to complete and you should see a new drive available in the hard drive.

The task is not complete yet you will need to format the drive and assign it a drive letter, to format the drive right click on it and select the format option.

You will see a new window pop up from where you can specify the name for the drive and the file system, choose NTFS as the default file system. You can perform a quick format on this drive since it was already partitioned by your computer maker earlier.

If a drive letter is not assigned to the new drive you can do so by right clicking on the drive and selecting change Drive Letter and Path and follow the instructions to add a new drive letter.

That’s it once you follow the above steps you should have a brand new drives to store files, music and movies without having to worry about having to move those files while re-installing or re-formatting your PC.

With less than 5 hours to go, the first kick off for UEFA Euro 2008 will commence! It will be a match between Switzerland and Czech Republic at Basel, St. Jakob-Park. I am as excited as you all are! As always 16 teams will be participating, the best countries of Europe. However, I won’t be at home to watch the first match because I have to be at a customer’s office to perform service pack updates on a server as it had to be done on a non-working hours.

I have no choice but to look for a method to watch the first UEFA Euro 2008 match online using the computers there. I do not want to mess up their computers or take any responsibility when something is wrong with the PC after installing third party software such as TV Ants, SopCast or TVU Player. My best choice would be finding a way to watch UEFA Euro 2008 LIVE online without installing any software and also able to bypass firewalls or proxy restrictions.

I could easily find a lot of websites from Google that is offering live streaming UEFA Euro 2008 but most of them charge money! It’s like a pay-per-view site. I wonder why would someone pay money for that when there are ways to watch UEFA Euro 2008 live for FREE?

My favorite online streaming video website is Justin.TV. It is a place to broadcast and watch live video online while chatting with friends. To use Justin.tv you need a PC or a MAC an up-to-date browser like Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari with the latest version of Adobe Flash Player installed.

To watch EUFA Euro 2008 Live on PC without installing any software, simply launch your favorite web browser and head on to www.justin.tv. Make sure you have the latest Adobe Flash Player installed. At the top bar, click the Sports category and you should see a few live channels that are broadcasting UEFA Euro 2008 live for free. Just click on it, wait for a few minutes and it’ll start streaming. The best part is you can even chat and discuss about the current match that you’re watching with other people who are also connected to the same channel.

Myp2p is a site specialized in schedules for all kind of Sports. You can watch Live Sports by using their schedules. The information they give is fully free. You only need some clients to download and then you’re ready to go. Prepare to watch every single UEFA Euro 2008 for free from 7th June until the 29th June.

Microsoft SearchTogether

Collaboration is one of the big buzz words these days on the Internet. In its most basic form its users that create content together which would include most of the so called social news websites like Digg, but also social bookmarking websites like Delicious. More advanced forms are Wikipedia were authors are working together to create and edit articles.

Microsoft is jumping on the bandwagon with Microsoft SearchTogether, a plugin for Internet Explorer that provides a feature to combine search results. This is very handy for any groups of people who have the same or a similar goal, be it students who do their research together, a company project team doing research for it or a family that is searching for information about their next vacation.

SearchTogether is strongly tied to the Windows Live service which is being used to log in and invite other possible participants. One user has to create a session which is the basic description for every research project and invite the other participants. That team leader is the only person who can add other members to the group.

Sessions get updated automatically once they are selected from the menu by a participant. By default SearchTogether offers the function to search the Live, Google and Yahoo search engines but any other conventional search will be picked up by the plugin as well. It’s possible to select a so called split or multi-engine search from the options instead of the standard search.

A split search splits the search results among all users who are currently logged in. If two group members are currently logged in and a search would reveal 20 search results each would receive 10 of them. A multi-engine search requires at least two logged in group members as well. Instead of splitting search results from one search engines it assigns all search results of a search engine to one group member.

Results can be rated and commented on and a summary is available that lists all search results that have been rated or that have received a comment.

Microsoft SearchTogether is a pretty interesting plugin for Internet Explorer 7 which I would love to see being ported to Firefox. I’m not sure if that is possible due to the Live tie-ins but some clever coders will probably find a way.

I’m not a huge fan of those visual tooltip applications no matter if they are integrated in the operating system or in other applications like Opera. The main reason for me personally was that I never had enough windows or tabs opened that I would need a visual tooltip to find the one I was looking for. Another reason was that those applications seemed to use a fair share of the system resources to display this graphical gimmick.

At least the second point of criticism has changed with the discovery of Visual Tooltip. That application is using less than 4 Megabytes of memory when its actively running which is pretty good for such a software.

Visual Tooltip does not need to be installed and can be run from the directory it was unpacked to. It adds an icon to the Windows system tray which offers access to the program’s options which are opened automatically during first start.

It basically provides two features for Windows XP and Windows Vista users. The first is the known visual tooltip that appears when the mouse cursor is moved over an item in the taskbar, the second and far more interesting is the so called dock that can contain several of the opened folders and applications displaying a small thumbnail of them that gets updated frequently.

That’s an interesting option for users that run programs that change their appearance - slightly - whenever information are updated, say a torrent download or rendering finishes. This can be seen eventually in the thumbnails of the dock. The dock can be placed freely on the screen but seems to be always on top of everything else except for full screen applications.
