Mozilla Facing Huge Outages For Firefox 3 Release

We have been waiting for the moment to download Firefox 3, but it seems like we have to keep waiting for quite some more time. The Mozilla sites for Firefox have been down since 1 PM EST and are not quite reliable at this moment.

And when the page does load there is no official announcement of Firefox 3 release, the download link is still pointing to Firefox 2.

We had not anticipated the Mozilla team to be so careless when they are trying to make a world record. For those who cannot wait to download your copies can download Firefox 3 using the links below.

5 Windows Tweaks That Do NOT Work

Information that are added on the Internet hardly ever go away which is highly problematic if the information is not correct. It becomes even more disturbing in sectors where everyone can have his say and it is not really a secret that most PC users have their list of recommended tweaks for Windows.

It’s fairly interesting that some of the tweaks that do not work have made it into tweaking applications and that new Windows tweaker sometimes contain these as well. Not working means that they either have no positive effect on the system or are even hurting performance or the system in general.

The following list contains 5 Windows tweaks that are fairly popular on the Internet but are proven to have no positive effect on the computer.
- 1. Deleting the contents of the Prefetch Folder: - Deleting the contents of the Windows prefetch folder will actually degrade system performance during startup of the applications that are listed in the folder. The folder contains a maximum of 128 pf files that Windows uses to quickly look up load information for the corresponding file. The folder gets cleaned automatically once the 128 file limit is reached.
- 2. Unload DLLs: - AlwaysUnloadDLL is a Registry setting in Windows that is very popular in tweaking utilities. Enabling this setting supposedly frees up system memory. The key has in reality no effect on Windows NT systems and was only used in pre-NT systems.
- 3. Enabling Superfetcher in Windows XP: Superfetcher is a feature of Windows Vista that is not existing in Windows XP.
- 4. Disabling System Restore: - Creating a System Restore Point is a quick process that normally only lasts a few seconds while the monitoring of the system causes no apparent performance loss. The only reason to disable System Restore would be lack of hard disk space.
- 5. Disabling QoS will free up the 20% bandwidth: - I’m seeing this tip all over the Internet. “Networking Quality of Service (QoS) refers to a variety of techniques that prioritize one type of traffic or program that operates across a network connection instead of relying only on “best effort” connectivity.” The computer is using 100% of the bandwidth but 20% can be reserved by programs when sending data. In reality disabling QoS has normally no effect on the bandwidth of the computer.

Identify Files with Trid

Users are usually puzzled for a moment if they encounter a file type that they never heard about before and that none of their installed applications seems to be able to load properly. A search on the Internet is probably the main way to identify a file extension and the application it can be opened with.

Another solution is offered by applications like Trid that scan the file and display those information on the local computer. This method has a few advantages over the Internet search. The first and most obvious one is that no Internet is required to identify the file and the second that there will be no danger of landing on a website that might lure the user into downloading malicious software.

Trid (via Shellcity) is actually a very sophisticated software that comes as a command line interface version, a Tridnet version that comes with a GUI, an online version that can be used on the Trid homepage and a scanner that can add new file extensions to the database.

Trid uses a database of definitions to identify files:

TrID uses a database of definitions which describe recurring patterns for supported file types. As this is subject to very frequent update, it’s made available as a separate package. Just download both TrID and this archive and unpack in the same folder.

New definitions can be added by scanning files on the system or by downloading the newest definition file from the Trid homepage.

BBC Builds a News Aggregator To Show Related Web Content

Media websites like The Washington Post, TIME, Wall Street Journal, etc. use Sphere to show related links next to their news stories. BBC went one step further and built their own news aggregator.

Now when you read some news story on the BBC website, you will also see links to related stories published on other mainstream media websites sorted in the order in which they were published (see screenshot).

You can watch BBC news aggregator live in action here. The human editors at BBC have no role in determining the stories that should get linked – its all done via computer algorithms just like Google News.

There’s a small difference though. Unlike the Sphere system that may link to blogs as well, the news aggregator of BBC limits itself to stories from regular English news sources and the content is supplied by Moreover.com.

Delete or Erase files with Eraser

I use my PC mostly for blogging, internet surfing and sometimes pay bills online. I also store sensitive information such as my education grades (this can be sensitive information too ) in my PC. Everything that I do and files that I saved are recorded and stored into the hard disk. Even though I have deleted the files and removed “the traces”, they are still exist in my hard disk.

Maybe you have heard about this. When we delete a file, the file that we have deleted is not removed from our hard disk entirely. It is still exist in our hard disk but the operating system doesn’t know where to find it because the first byte of the file has been changed to E5 (a HEX value). The data is still remains on the hard disk unchanged unless when a new data is written on it.

If you have sensitive documents in your PC or you don’t want somebody else found what you did with the PC, you can wipe your traces by using Eraser. Eraser is a powerful tool that can help you to cover up your tracks. This freeware tool will overwrite the file up to 35 times when using Guttmann technique.

Let say you saved your medical report in your PC and want to delete it. You can Shift + Delete the file but as I mentioned earlier, the file is still exist on the hard disk as long as no new data been written on it. So, use Eraser and delete the file entirely.

Eraser provides many features. You can use it to delete and move files or folders securely. It also can remove everything in your Recycle Bin in just a snap. Just right click on the Recycle Bin icon and choose which technique that you want to use to clean up your Recycle Bin.
- Works with Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP (32/64),Vista (32/64), Windows Server 2003 and DOS. It works with any drive including IDE, SCSI and RAID, and CD-RW’s.

- Comes with an Eraser Scheduler that allows you to create user-defined tasks.

- Supports FAT32 and NTFS Files Systems.
- Eraser is easy to use and comes with a dedicated support network.
Another great feature that I like in Eraser is, you can overwrite free spaces in your hard disk by using Eraser. With this, your privacy will be protected because the unallocated data on the hard disk will be wiped out completely.

Your credit card numbers, bank account number and everything that you keep in your PC can be recoverable even you have deleted them from your PC. Use Eraser! There is no business issue here. I get nothing when promoting this software. I just want to share with you this tip so you can protect your privacy and no one will be able to compromise you in the future.

The best games every Tuesday that I have found and written about at my games website Take 9. I do like to play games every now and then and have discovered many throughout the years. At least one game is reviewed every day at Take 9. All games are free of course and either browser games that can be instantly played or free games that can be downloaded and played on the local computer.

This week was strongly centered around Japanese arcade shooters and puzzle games. If you love those you find some very innovative and interesting games that are definitely fun to play.

Lets start with the Japanese arcade shooters and go from there. I want to mention two of them in this recap: Titanion which is a vertically scrolling time based shooter and Tumiki Fighters which scrolls horizontally. Both have wonderful graphics and an interesting game play. Be prepared for lots of bullets as well.

I reviewed Cookie Cruncher today which is a remake of Yoshi’s Cookies, an addictive puzzle game for the SNES back in the good old days. Something for a puzzle-addicted girlfriend.

Kong on the other hand is a mix of Unreal Tournament and Quake in 2D. It offers multiplayer modes like Deathmatch and Capture the Flag with great graphics and interesting weapons.

Surprisingly though all games can be downloaded and played on Windows PCs. Have fun, lots of and remember to bookmark Take 9 as well to get your daily share of interesting games.

Apart from the 8MP camera phone launch, Sony Ericsson has also launched another 4 phones targeted at lower and middle segment- F305, S302, K330 and J132. S302 is a snapshot phone, slick and slimline with a stylish design and a premium, high-gloss finish. The F305 is a game-centric phone, with dedicated keys, stereo speakers and motion control. Backup Your Bookmarks In Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, Flock and Opera

Bookmarking is a integral part of your browser and over a period of time you may have collected hundreds and thousands of bookmarks. There are various ways to synchronize and backup your bookmarks that we have already talked about. But the fact that many people do not know the basic way to backup bookmarks from browsers led us to write this post.

In this post we will basically tell you how to backup your bookmarks in Firefox 3, Firefox 2, Internet Explorer, Flock, Safari and Opera. Note you do not need any additional tools to backup your bookmarks with the tips we will discuss in this post.
Backup Bookmarks in Firefox 3
Firefox 3 has a enhanced bookmarking system and that is one of the reasons why we are going to talk about both Firefox 3 and Firefox 2 separately.

To backup your bookmarks in Firefox 3 navigate to the Bookmarks menu and click on organize bookmarks option.

A new bookmark manager window will popup showing you the bookmarks you have. In the new popup window click on the Import and Backup option and select Export HTML from it.

Once you have clicked on the Export HTML option you will be asked for a location to store the resulting html file containing all your bookmarks. Choose a location and save the file in a safe location.

The next time you create a new profile or install a fresh version of Firefox you can simply use the Import HTML option to import your bookmarks into Firefox.
Backup Bookmarks in Firefox 2
Firefox 2 slightly differs from the Firefox 3 method with regards to user interface, in order to backup your bookmarks in Firefox 2, click on the bookmarks menu and select organize bookmarks.

Once you have clicked on the Organize Bookmarks item the bookmark manager window will popup. In the new window from the file menu select Export and choose the location where you want to backup your bookmarks.

After you have backed up your bookmarks you can easily import them back using the import function when you create a new Firefox profile or reinstall it from scratch.
Backup Bookmarks In Internet Explorer
To backup your bookmarks in Internet Explorer navigate to the File menu and click on Import and Export option.

A new pop-up window should open showing you a message saying “Welcome to Import/Export Wizard”. Click on the next button in the wizard, you will be shown different options to choose from. Select Export Favorites from the list shown to you and click on next.

In the next frame select the root folder of the bookmarks usually named Favorites.

Clicking on next will take you to the final frame where you will be able to select whether you want to export the bookmark to an external application or save to a file. For the purpose of backing up your bookmarks select the option to export to a file or address and click on next.

Once you have done that click on the finish button. Your bookmarks will be backed up to the location your chose. To import your bookmarks back into Internet Explorer choose the Import option.
Backup Bookmarks In Flock
To backup your bookmarks in Flock choose the Favorites Manager option from the Favorites menu.

A new window should open up showing you your bookmarks, in this window select the Export option from the file menu;

A new save dialog show be shown to you when you click on the export option, choose the location where you want to backup your bookmarks and click on save.

Importing is easy too just select the Import option and specify the location to your backed up bookmarks file to restore all your favorite bookmarks into Flock.
Backup Bookmarks in Safari
To backup bookmarks in Safari, select the Export bookmarks option from the File menu.

Once you have clicked on the option you should see a file save dialog allowing you asking you for the location to save the bookmarks. Choose the location you want to save your bookmarks in and click on the Save button.

You can use the Import Bookmarks option in Safari to re-import the bookmarks once again.
Backup Bookmarks in Opera
To backup your bookmarks in Opera browser, click on the Manage Bookmarks option in the Bookmarks menu.

A new tab will be opened showing you the bookmarks in Opera. In the new window from the File menu select Export as HTML or Export Opera Bookmarks option.

A new save dialog should be shown to you from where you can save the file and use it to restore your bookmarks at a later date.
Summarizing

Backing up your bookmarks is quite easy and you can easily do it by yourself without the need for any external tools. Your bookmarks may contain lots of important links which you may have collected over time and losing them could undo quite a lot of work.

To be on the safer side remember to always keep a backup of your bookmarks, better safe than to be sorry.

How To Create Full Windows Backup by Imaging Without Using Norton Ghost

I have desktop system that is only used for testing purposes. I install and test lots of software, play around with Windows configuration and system files, infect my test system with trojans to test the efficiency of an antivirus software, and many more! Because I mess around with my test system so much, I had to restore Windows at least once a week, or sometimes even up to a few times!

Reinstalling Windows is a time consuming task and I never like doing that. Fortunately I’ve known about Norton Ghost many years ago and I’ve been using it to create an image of my hard drive, so I can easily restore everything back to the original clean state within minutes. However, Norton Ghost is not free. There are other freeware that is able to create disk image but I am never satisfied with it, so I am stuck with Norton Ghost for nearly 10 years…

I think I am going to make a change starting from today because I discovered a very powerful disk imaging software which is FREE!

Macrium Reflect is a backup and disk imaging software program for Microsoft Windows developed by Paramount Software UK Ltd in 2006. It creates disk images and file backup archives using Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service to ensure ‘point in time’ data accuracy. This means that you can create a full backup of your hard drive through imaging even when you’re logged on in Windows.

There are 2 versions of Macrium Reflect. The free and full version. The free version can only be used on Windows XP and Vista. You’re able to create disk or partition images and access them from Windows Explorer. It has a scheduler where you can create backup from the defined time. Finally it can also create Linux Rescue CD or BartPE Rescue CD, which has network support so you can save the created image to another computer. You can directly burn the Live CD from the software.

As for the full version, it has all the features in free version plus the following: Windows Server 2003 compatibility, File and Folder backup and restore, Differential disk images and backups, Incremental disk images and backups, VBScript Generator, Email notifications, Run programs before or after backup, Shut down PC after backup, Windows system event log support, Windows PE 2.0 Rescue CD with RAID support, Windows boot menu, Technical support by email and forum access.

Although it’d be nice to have all the features in the full version, the free version is good enough to help me easily restore Windows within minutes.

Let me take you through a simple step-by-step disk imaging with Macrium Reflect FREE Edition. Let’s say Windows is installed at C: drive and D: would be your CD/DVD drive. I’d advice you to create another partition (E: drive) to save the backup image.

1. Run Macrium Reflect
2. Click Backup from the menu bar and select Create Image.

3. Create Backup Wizard will appear. Click Next, and select the partition that you want to backup. Select C: drive and click Next.

4. Now select Local Hard Disk and browse to E: drive. Click Next
5. Click Finish to begin imaging.
When the imaging completes, you should have a file with random letters and numbers with the extension .mrimg at your E: drive. That’s the image of your C: drive.

Next, you’ll have to create a Rescue CD.
1. Run Macrium Reflect
2. Click Other Tasks from menu bar and select Create Rescue CD.
I’d prefer to use Linux, so select Linux and click Next.

3. Put in a blank CDR disc into your CD/DVD drive and click Finish.

When your Windows system goes haywire or refuse to boot up, then you will have to start your PC using a rescue CD. Just boot up your computer with the Linux Rescue CD that you just created. Follow the on-screen instructions from Restore Wizard to recover partitions from your saved image file.

When your computer has a system or software that is hard to configure and get it right, it’d be best to create an image of your partition as a precaution. Whenever the system or software doesn’t work and you can’t get people to help you to fix it, the easiest way to fix it yourself is by restoring from the image that you created while it is still working. There you go, no need to use Norton Ghost because Macrium Reflect can do the job.

Screencast: How to Select Multiple Lines of Text in Firefox 3

With Firefox 3, you can easily select multiple and non-consecutive pieces of text from a web page as shown in this GIF screencast.

The secret is the Ctrl key. Select a line in Firefox with your mouse and then press the Ctrl key before selecting the second line.

Unlike other browsers like IE or Opera, Firefox will not clear your previous text selections if the Control key remains pressed at the time of selection. This feature will definitely come handy while clipping web pages. Thanks Keith.

For some reason, the trick did not work for me on Google Search pages and Google News but I guess the culprit is Firebug.

Firefox 3 Final out!

Firefox 3 final has been uploaded to the Mozilla ftp site just a minute ago and everyone can already download the client if they do not want to wait for the official announcement on the Mozilla website and the “world-record” website. As usual it is available for all supported operating systems and languages which means everyone should find his version in the ftp.

We have covered earlier that Mozilla is trying to create a world-record for the most software downloads in 24 hours. More than 1.4 million users have already pledged to download Firefox 3 today and we can expect to see a (much) higher number in the end because not everyone knows about the world record and not everyone obviously entered his email address for the pledge.

No link to the new release notes yet. I have to close my browser now to start the installation of Firefox 3 final.

Speed up Vista

When I first got Windows Vista about 7 or so months ago it did seem to be pretty slow compared to Windows XP.

After checking out all the online tech websites I followed all the tweaking tips such as disabling background services, turning of animations and visual effects, using the Vista Power Saver application and various ‘speed-up-windows’ programs.

Since then I have reinstalled a couple of times and discovered that all these tips are essentially useless on a decent, fairly new computer.

I could notice no performance improvement at all with all visual themes enabled then with them disabled and I got near identical battery life with aero on as I did off. I’m going to call this as complete bollocks:

Running in task bar with private workset of 5.5M and 0% CPU it will do all work for you, by enabling and disabling customizable features when power source changed or battery power fall under certain percent.

All you need is the advanced Vista Power Options and you can save a lot more battery power. As far as disabling background services go I will simply echo Ed Bott’s advice:

That is breathtakingly bad advice. It is as if the automotive columnist in your local newspaper told you to open the hood of your car and start disconnecting wires and hoses one at a time to see which ones made your car run faster or quieter or smoother. It might be hours or days or even weeks before you run a program that requires the service you disabled, at which point you might have no clue that the disabled service is the cause of the nonfunctional program.

Here’s the reality: On an otherwise healthy PC running Windows Vista, disabling most built-in Windows services is extremely unlikely to have any noticeable effect on memory usage, startup or shutdown time, or system performance. On the contrary, you are more likely to create problems by disabling services. Not to mention the amount of time you will surely waste and the productivity you will lose with all that starting and stopping and rebooting and web searching.

Any services which are causing significant slow downs on your computer are likely to originate from a third-party source such as Nero’s background indexing. Windows Defender may also cause some slowdown with it’s daily scan.

And lastly the system tweaks, many of these will make some small improvements, but they largely apply to specific actions and are not connected to overall performance itself.

Select and Copy Multiple Areas of Text in Firefox 3

Firefox 3 is really filled with rich features and we are learning about them everyday, here is a real quick post to an awesome new feature in Firefox 3 which you should not miss.

The trick is similar to selecting different files which are not stacked together in Windows explorer using the Ctrl button.

In Firefox 3 when you want to select multiple areas of text without having to repeatedly copy and paste, click on the Ctrl button and use your mouse to select multiple areas of text;

Once you have selected the text use the hotkey Ctrl+C or right click and select Copy to copy over your selected text from multiple areas to the clipboard.

Once you have copied the text you can use the hotkey Ctrl+V to paste the copied text in a text editor. When you paste from the clipboard only the text that you had selected will be copied, check screenshot below (Click to enlarge).

A really awesome feature and the reason we are loving and anticipating the release of Firefox 3 tomorrow quite eagerly. Also a reminder from Techie Buzz that you can be a part of the Guinness world record when you download Firefox 3 tomorrow, so give your pledge and make history.

Flock 2 Beta

Well this month has been all about browsers as both Firefox and Opera release new versions and people compare each of the 4 main competitors Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera and Safari.

Flock is built on top of Firefox and the team have been working hard over the last couple months to upgrade Flock to the new Firefox 3 base.

Flock 2.0 Beta 1 was released last night and is a substantial update to Flock 1.2. The official blog said the following:

The Flock 2 beta marks a very important watershed moment for us. And we have some amazing things planned for the remainder of the year, so please help us refine this product by running Flock 2 beta (one), and logging imperfections by using the ‘bug icon’ in the upper right of your browser.

Key changes are primarily to security, stability and performance and no key new features have been introduced. However improvements and enhancements are across the board and include some very welcome changes.

The biggest one for me has been to the People sidebar, previously in Flock 1.2 the number of supported accounts was causing the sidebar to fill up and for accounts to be lost past the border of the bar. Flock 2.0 changes this and makes it easier to see all the accounts at the same time, which you can see here:

Small changes yes, but necessary. It can become easy simply incorporating new features with every release but it needs constant review in order to assess how the existing features can be improved.

Bookmarks and tags are now located in a improved Favourites Library which improves bookmark management and organisation and is also significantly faster then the previous manager.

Performance has been considerably optimised, and Flock now has a larger system footprint, but improves memory management so having multiple tabs never gets out of control.

Aside from these you can also expect additional support for online applications Gmail and Zoho, a new download manager, the awesome bar (of which Flock already had a similar version), improved password manager and much faster page rendering.

To get an idea of what Flock page loading speed is like take a look at this test of Firefox technology compared to Opera, IE and Safari.

Flock is a worthwhile upgrade. Yes it’s buggy but not so much as to cause any major issues, get it here.

Mike Pegg from Canada has been diligently writing the Google Maps Mania blog for the past three years on all things related to Google Maps. His blogspot blog features an excellent collection of mashups and tools ever created using the Google Maps API.

And now this “unofficial” Google Maps bloggers has been offered an “official” position at Google for doing what he loves – promote Google Maps.

He has joined the geo-marketing team at Google as a product marketing manager for the Google Maps API.

The Google Maps Mania blog will continue to live though Mike has handed over the reigns to Keir Clarke – another Google Maps enthusiasts.
