Set Facebook Status As Windows Live Messenger Personal Status

Want to let your messenger friends know about your Facebook Status? If you are a Windows Live Messenger User there is a easy way to do that.

Fibby is a Windows Live Messenger add-in that will allow you to set your Windows Live Messenger Personal Status Message as the status you have in Facebook.

You do not need to keep updating the Windows Live Messenger as Fibby will automatically set the status for you after performing few steps to setup Fibby to be used with Windows live Messenger.

Instructions to setup Fibby With Windows Live Messenger:
- Open Windows Live Messenger, click your display name at the top of the window, and select Options from the drop-down menu (or type Alt-T and select Options).
- Select “Add-ins” from the items in the left pane.
- Click the “Add to Messenger” button and browse to the directory where you installed Fibby. The default location is Program Files\Fibby. Select the file “Facebook.StatusUpdater.dll”
- Fibby will start and prompt you through the next steps.
Once you have successfully added Fibby, you need to turn it on by clicking on your display name on the main Messenger window and selecting “Turn on Fibby”. (It may take up to a minute for your PSM to update.)

Happy Birthday WordPress

Well it’s been a really long weekend and I had quite a break and relaxation for past 4 days. Posting for last 3-4 days has been quite low, but now it’s back to work and blogging.

Oh and I also released a plugin over the weekend don’t forget to check out the awesome Better Tags Manager a neat plugin I created to plug a missing feature in WordPress just like I had created Better Comments Manager more than a year ago to again plug a missing feature in WordPress.

Talking about WordPress here is wishing you a Very Happy Birthday from a guy who loves your code and loves to code for you. And thank you WordPress team for bringing this wonderful blogging tool into the world 5 years ago. It has definitely changed the way people share their views to the world.

I have been using SnagIt to capture screenshots for long, and can safely say that it is one of the best piece of codes available for this purpose. The promoters of the SnagIt also run a hugely popular service ScreenCast.com, where you can upload your screencast and share them with others.

For those, not knowing what exactly is a screencast…

Better Tags Manager WordPress Plugin Release

I am very proud and happy to release my 5th plugin for the WordPress community. The plugin called Better Tags Manager (BTM) makes your life easier when it comes to editing tags for your posts.

Better Tags Manager (BTM) was created out of my own needs to completely do away with categories and move to tags. The problem arose when, converting categories to tags left many of my posts hanging in between with no tags.

That said editing tags was also not easy for me and that is the reason I created this plugin which is the best and easy way to edit tags, manage tags, delete them, bulk edit tags and add tags to multiple posts without even editing them individually.

So What Does better Tags Manager Do?
Better Tags Manager (BTM) allows you to edit tags from the manage post section without having to visit the post itself.

In addition to that it will allow you to filter out posts which do not have tags and edit or bulk edit them. If you do not want to edit tags individually you can filter out and edit bulk posts at once by choosing the bulk edit option.

A nice little feature with the plugin is that it will also allow you to add tags to multiple posts without having to edit a single post. So say you want to tag all posts with “chicken” in it as “Birds” simply use the search option and search for chicken.

On the top of the page you will see a option to add tags to all the posts, simply add the tags and select the posts you want to add the tags to and click on the “Add Tags to All Posts” button and the tags will be appended (in this case we append the tags) to the posts you selected.

The possibilities of usage for this plugin are huge and its up to how you use it to get the most benefits.

Read-me and FAQ for the plugin will be coming up shortly.

I have not added any screenshots for this plugin, since I have something more better. I have added videos to demonstrate the usage for this plugin. So go ahead view it and give me your opinions and feedback. I would love to improve on the plugin.

Search emails quickly with GMail Search Options

Gmail is getting more and more popular these days.

With its ever increasing storage space, the concept of deleting your old emails and attachments to free up space for new emails, is now virtually over. You are no more expected to delete old email.

A big relief.

But this has increased complexity in searching an old email. It sometimes becomes a pain in the ass to search for an old communication, an attachment, a photo in your thousands of thousands of email archives.

Thankfully, there are a few search operators, which come handy in such a situation.

For instance, you can use
- from:keith has:attachment - to search for an attachment sent by Keith
- from: xyz http - A link from my pal xyz:
- to:me is:unread in:inbox - The messages in my inbox sent directly to me that I haven’t read yet.
There are many more such operators.

And if you are of my type, who just can’t remember all these operators, there is a simple solution, a link right alongside the search button, which will open search options available in your Gmail interface. You just have to key in your queries.

There is nothing new to it, but still I have found that most people not using it.

Use it, it is real powerful.

Keep Track of Online Signups with Signup Record Tracker

Have you ever been in a situation where you have forgotten which all websites you have signed up for? With me this has been a case for a long long time. I keep signing up for new web2.0 services and at other interesting forums and tend to forget what username and passwords I had used to signup for a particular site.

You can of course keep track of them by saving the passwords with the inbuilt tool browsers provide you with, but not all websites allow your browser to store your passwords.

The most simple solution in such cases is to store the information about the websites, username, passwords in a database format so that you can easily view and retrieve them whenever you want.

Signup Record Tracker is one such software which will allow you to store the information you used to signup for a website and view them whenever you want. The application also helps you launch the website from within the application itself.

As you can see from the screenshot, the application is really bare bones and is just created to do what it says, store your signup information for different sites and make it easily available to you.

Ever wanted to create ASCII art from your images? Browsing around our daily dose of Internet brought us to a cool little software that will allow you to convert any images to ASCCI art HTML pages.

Image2HTML is a handy little desktop software that will allow you to convert your image files to ASCII art.

Image2Html actually converts an image to a full-color ASCII art that may be rendered in any common web browser. The program scans and analyzes the input image to generate a pattern by using colored font characters.

The software requires no installation and can be run out of the box by double clicking on the exe file.

We decided to give the software a run for its money (its absolutely free by the way) and were more than surprised to see the results.

Below is the original Image we used to convert to ASCII Art;

And the output in ASCII art HTML format looks like the one below;

Mind you the entire image is made up of characters and was created in some 5-7 seconds or so. For those who want to view the html source for the above image you can download this zip file which contains the HTML code for the image.

The picture did not turn out very well and it was probably my mistake since I did not tune up the software well enough.

If you are looking to create some fine art and showcase it to your Friends and Family you should definitely give this utility a try, and since it is absolutely free you do not have to worry about paying any money too.

Automatically Move Files and Folders From Desktop to Predefined Folders

The desktop is the most easily accessible place on your computer and many people simply clutter with tons of files that are downloaded from the Internet or received via Instant messengers and so on.

I for one believe in having a clean desktop but having said that I have to make some time of my busy schedule to do some spring cleaning of the desktop every now and then.

To make my life easier I came across a very useful utility that will move files from my desktop to predetermined folders automatically, not only will that save me time but also guarantee that my desktop will be squeaky clean all the time.

Desktop Teleporter is a handy utility that will teleport (move) files and folders that are newly created on your desktop to pre-determined folders, thus helping you keep you desktop clean and clutter-free.

You can setup rules for moving files and folders to your predetermined folders. The rules can be setup to exclude certain file extensions and file names which you would like to remain on the desktop.

This is a handy utility and I recommend it to all those people who have cluttered desktops and do not have time to clean it up. And the best part is that the software is completely free to use.

Eject USB Disk Faster with USB Disk Ejector

Having a lot of USB drives is a great help to backup files and store your media library and so on. Plugging in a USB drive is fairly easy but ejecting it needs to be done with care so that there is no data loss or damage to the drive.

Windows by default provides you with a utility which will allow you to safely remove the USB hardware from your PC without causing any damage to it. That said the utility provided by Windows has a long way to go with their interface which is very confusing to the end user.

USB Disk Ejector is a software that will allow you to quickly remove USB devices in Windows. The software was originally designed to only remove pen drives but can now remove any type of attached USB devices safely.
Why Should You Use This If Windows Already Provides a User Interface?
Like I already said the Windows user interface leaves a lot to be desired and I wish they could make it a little less complicated than what it is.

USB Disk Ejector on the other hand has a simple interface and directly shows you the attached devices which you can then easily remove from the PC.

As you can see you can even remove IPOD directly from the interface by simply double clicking on it.

The software also provides a CLI (Command Line Interface) using which you can
- Eject the drive that the program is running from.
- Eject a drive by specifying a drive letter.
- Eject a drive by specifying a drive name.
- Eject a drive by specifying a partial drive name.
Summarizing
I will definitely be using this software since I have a pen drive, portable HDD, Backup Drive and IPOD which I use along almost daily and this definitely helps my task of ejecting those drives as safe as possible.

Get the missing ‘UP’ button in VISTA Windows Explorer

Every PC user switching from XP to Vista, fondly remembers the ‘UP’ button in Windows Explorer, which allows you to quickly jump to one level up in the folder hierarchies. Most XP users are so accustomed to using this highly useful button, that it is very frustrating in the beginning, when you switch to Vista.

Mavis Applications, which are known for their innovative software developments, provide a small piece of download, which restores a shiny, bold UP button, just what you have been missing long. It is super easy to install and is light-weight, only 30 kb of RAM space !

But it is not free, you will have to pay a small sum of $5 for it, but you can download and use it free for the first five days.

There is yet another alternative, QTTabbar, which lets you get the UP button, along with the tabbed browsing functionality to Windows Explorer. I found a nice step-by-step guide for its installation here at How To Geek. and the best part is that it is FREE. But the installation of this tool is not that simple.

And here comes the best tool, in case you are just not knowing it. You know best is always revealed at last.

Simply use ALT + Up Arrow Key.

Its simple and its FREE.

Compare Contents of any Files In Different Folders and Remove Duplicates

File management is a not a real easy task and over a period of time you may have gathered different documents, music files, images and stored it in your PC. During this period you may also made several copies of your files and stored them in different folders leading to duplicate files all over the place.

Hunting down such duplicates can be quite a waste of time and comparing both documents to see that the documents are exactly similar is another headache.

That said here is a very useful utility that will make comparing files a breeze.

File Comparator is a software which allows you to quickly compare contents of any files in specified folders and shows you pairs of file which contains the same data, allowing you to make a decision to delete the duplicate file.

File Comparator can compare content of any type of files and spot the duplicates. The comparison does not take the filename, date etc into consideration for comparison. It will only compare the contents within the file.

In short File Comparator is a duplicate finder which will help you easily find and delete duplicate content from your computer.

I ran a small test and was impressed with the output. I am now raring to put this to test on my 500GB harddrive and run some spring cleaning. File Comparator is completely free to use and is definitely a worthwhile to have. This small and useful utility also makes it to the Techie Buzz must have utilities.

Do Away With Windows Restart by Cleaning Exiting Explorer.exe

I have been installing quite a lot of softwares and many of those want me to restart the computer so that their changes are applied to the PC.

While browsing my feeds I came across a cool unrelated tip by DailyApps which talked about restarting the Explorer.exe cleanly, in that I saw another cool tip which could allow you to also do away with the boring restart every application demands.

I keep trying variety of registry tricks everyday, and install and uninstall numerous applications that demand a restart whenever I install them. To get away with boring restart process I normally kill Explorer.exe from the task manager and wait for it to restart automagically.

So I believe that cleanly exiting Explorer.exe will mean that I do not have to restart my PC after all, super cool. Here is how to exit explorer.exe cleanly.

Click the Start button. Press and hold the CTRL and SHIFT keys, and right-click on an empty area in the Start menu. You’ll see a Popup menu containing the two options namely Exit Explorer and Properties. Alternatively you could get the above Popup menu by holding the CTRL and SHIFT keys and then right-clicking on the Start menu power button itself.

After selecting the Exit Explorer command, the shell (Start menu, Taskbar and the Desktop) will exit and the other applications will continue to run normally. You need to manually start a new Explorer.exe process by launching Task Manager. Use the CTRL+SHIFT+ESC key sequence to launch Task Manager. From the File menu of Task Manager, choose New Task (Run…), type Explorer.exe and press ENTER.

Disable User Access Control (UAC) with One Click

For many of the new Vista users the User Access Control (UAC) is probably the most annoying piece of software bundled in the Operating system.

There are many ways to get rid of the UAC alerts but not all are geeks and not all would be able to follow the instructions properly.

NoUAC (French language site) is a utility which will make your life much easier with regards do disabling the UAC completely.

NoUAC works out of the box and does not require any installation, simply download the file and double click on it.

Make a selection to either disable or enable the UAC based on your preferences and click Ok. Your preferences will be automatically applied to the system.

Note: You will have to restart your PC once for your UAC changes to be applied to the PC.

On final thoughts thank god for such developers who make life much easier for people.

Work Folder: Fool Your Boss While You Enjoy Your Games

I have had several experiences with having fun online but this takes the cake over all the others.

Work Folder is a site which looks just like your regular Windows Explorer. The front page of the site contains numerous Word files and Powerpoint files which make the site look like a actual desktop.

But like I said the looks are only to deceive, clicking on any of the files will load a online game which you can play. (Now how’s that for wasting time by fooling your boss).

The games are based in flash and can be loaded on any browser with Flash support. There are lots of different games available and tried few of them. The site is a real time waster so you were warned before you start using it.

The only flaw I saw in the site was that it does not have a quick way to go back to the main folder view which is shown when the site is first loaded.

There are three different resolutions you can enter the site in to match with your desktop resolution.
So what are you waiting for, go ahead and start fooling your boss. Hey don’t blame me if you get into trouble :).
