Fix for Future Posts Not Posting In WordPress

Over the past few days we were facing a issue with the future posts feature in WordPress, while the future posts correctly showed a timer to the scheduled time, once it reached the scheduled it started in reverse direction and the timer went from 1 minute to 2 minutes and so on.

To top that, we also had a issue where few of our post dated future posts published ahead of time. This was particularly frustrating and we checked several things such as server time, WordPress time stamp and other possible places where we could find out the problem.

After trying for a couple of days, we finally figured narrowed the issue to one of the changes we made to WordPress Timezone to adjust the clock for Daylight savings time. It turns out that WordPress is not pretty good at handling Daylight savings time and this caused a problem with the future posts. We went back and corrected the timing back to not include the Daylight savings adjustment and our future posts started working fine again.

So if you have made changes to your Timezone and are seeing issues with future posts, just revert the settings to normal time without DST and your future posts should work fine.

How To Remove Duplicate Contacts In Yahoo Mail?

Continuing our series of posts where we show users how to remove duplicate contacts, we will show users how they can remove duplicate contacts in Yahoo Mail.

If you are Windows Live Hotmail user, you may want to consider reading our earlier post, where we showed users how to remove duplicate contacts from Windows Live Hotmail.

Yahoo Mail has quite recently added a new feature allowing users to remove duplicate contacts, though the feature is still in the beta phase, it does it jobs good enough. To remove duplicate contacts in Yahoo Mail, login to your account and click on the Options link in the right hand side and select Mail options from the drop down link.

A new page should showing you different options, click on the link that says Contacts Options, clicking on this link should open up a new window.

Tip: To load the address book option quickly copy and paste the URL (without the quotes) “http://address.mail.yahoo.com/?A=o” in the same browser window to directly load the address book options for Yahoo.

In the address book options page click on the link that says Clean up Duplicates (beta).

Once you click on the link a new inline window will open showing you the duplicate contacts in your account.

You can click on the link to merge exact contacts into one, once the exact contacts have been merged, click on the Next button.

Clicking on the next button will take your through a wizard allowing you to easily merge the other similar contacts into a single entry.

Once you have gone through the wizard to merge the similar entries your Yahoo Mail address book be free of duplicate contacts.

Send Tweets From Your Favorite Instant Messengers with Twitt’d

We just love twitter, not only because of the ease of use and simplicity, but also because of the number of applications that have been built using their API.

Those applications make it easier for twitter users to tweet from wherever they are and whichever application they choose. Though twitter have disabled updates by IM for some time now, we landed upon a really useful service called Twitt’d, which will allow users to send tweets using their favorite instant messengers including Skype, Google Talk, Jabber, Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger.

To start using twitt’d, add the contacts to one of your favorite instant messenger.

You can start using the service by simply saying hi or what’s up? to the bot, once you have done that it will start asking you for your login information and password. Once you have authenticated yourself, you can send and receiving tweets.

Note: We could not authenticate while using yahoo messenger and Google talk contact is having some problem, do let us know if you could get through either of the messengers.

You can also use the following commands with Twitt’d:

/updates - toggles update receiving from people you follow
/changepassword NEWPASSWORDHERE - use this if you’ve changed your Twitter account password
/forgetme - delete your Twitt’d account

So if your missing the IM update feature from twitter you know which bot to add.

Cool Way To Search Images From Your Desktop [Adobe Air App]

Adobe Air applications have been known to be eye candy, many such applications have become a part of our day to day life (we will shortly reveal all the adobe air apps we use). Our eyes certainly lit up on seeing the latest Adobe Air application called Thumb Fall.

Thumb Fall is a Adobe Air based image search application, that will allow you to search images using Google image search, Yahoo image search, Friendfeed, FFFound and more.

Thumb Fall is not just any image search application, it has a great feature where it drops the images desktop making it much more exciting to search images with. You can also drag the click on the images and move it the way you want. Take a look at the screencast below to see how thumb fall displays images to users.

The search results take a bit of time to load and you have to be patient till it starts, once the search results have been downloaded it will start displaying the .

Searching images with thumb nail is fun, though it lacks the ability to actually save the images and does not have documentation to get to learn more about it. Also once the search has started it is pretty hard to stop it, and it will keep on displaying the images continuously. You can stop the search by exiting the application using the icon in the system tray.

How to Create Shortcuts in Linux with Symbolic Links?[Linux Tip]

Windows users should be quite familiar with shortcuts, which allow them to launch programs by creating a link to the executable. Linux users too can create shortcuts, to quickly launch files and folders. The shortcuts in Linux are also known symbolic links.

Creating shortcuts definitely saves you a lot of time, if you have several folders and browsing to them would require you to change directories frequently a simple shortcut would save you the time required to browse to the folder.

We have symbolic links to our themes and plugins folders for this site in the FTP SFTP user home directory. The symbolic link ensures that we can easily navigate to the folders, without having to go through multiple directories to reach the destination file or folder. Using this simple trick you can open any folder by just using a single click or command in Linux.

In Linux based systems, you can use the “ln” command to create symbolic links to any file or folders, for example we created a symbolic link to our plugins folder using the following command.

ln –s ~/var/www/techie-buzz.com/wp-content/plugins

The “-s” parameter tells the command to create a symbolic link (aka shortcut) rather than a hard link. Once you have created the symbolic link you can use the “cd” command to traverse to the folder, the “cd” command will take you to the actual folder you created a link for, check the screenshot below;

You will also see a shortcut to the plugins folder when you login to your FTP site, check the screenshot below;

Simple things like this add up to save you a lot of time and keep you productive. Will Nokia 5800 Tube be the next iPhone Killer?

We have been playing around with our new toy the Nokia N95 for few days now, and it is definitely the best smartphone available today. Except for it not being a touch phone, it beats the iPhone outright on features. We will be posting a detailed review about it, once we have all the applications and games installed and tested.

In the meantime we did see another phone that caught our attention. The Nokia 5800 Tube is rumored to be a real killer phone and it’s possibly the first phone from Nokia to have a touch screen. Nokia 5800 Tube will make use of the S60 Touch UI built on Symbian (which is great) OS for mobile phones. Knowing how good Nokia smartphones are, we can definitely vouch that this phone will prove to be the real competition to iPhones.

Here are a few screenshots we collected that shows leaked pictures of the Nokia 5800 Tube, whose launch date is still unannounced and neither has the product been confirmed officially.

Recursively Delete Files in Folders and Sub Folders Using Command Prompt

One of our readers asked us a real interesting question, which we really loved to solve. The question was tricky but the solution was real simple.

The question asked to us was;

“Do you know if there’s a way to delete files of a particular filetype from a set of folders quickly in Windows?

For example, I’ve got a folder by the name "ABC" and I’ve got some pictures and music files there, and I need a tool that automatically deletes all those pictures (i.e., files of a particular format like JPEG) quickly from the ABC folder and its sub-folders.

The task of deleting files recursively from folders and sub-folders does not require any tools and can be easily done using the Windows command prompt. For this post we will assume that the directory, you want to delete the files from is “D:\ABC” and it contains several sub-folders from which you want to delete the files.

Note: Before using the command, we want to warn you that the files will be completely deleted bypassing the recycle bin. If you are looking for a safer way to delete files, we can point you to a earlier post where we introduced the recycle command, using which you can safely delete files to the recycle bin using the command prompt, you can also use wildcards to recycle the files.
How to Delete files recursively in folders and sub-folders using the command prompt?
To delete the files, first open a command prompt window and navigate to the folder you want to delete the files from. To do that use the Windows + R hotkey to open the run window, type in “cmd” without the quotes and hit enter.

Once the command prompt has opened navigate to the folder you want to recursively delete the files from. Once you are in the folder, issue the following command:

del /S test.txt

This command will delete all the files named test.txt inside the current folders, as well as from all the sub-folders present in that folder. The “/S” directive tells the del command to delete all the files recursively from within the folder and sub-folders. See screenshot below.

You can also use wildcards to delete files of only a particular type, the command to delete files recursively based on wildcards will look like:

del /S /P *.jpg

Note: The /P tells the command to prompt the user before deleting the file, we recommend using this with wildcards.

If you want to delete files from only the current directory change the command as below:

del *.jpg

Several of our readers have been asking this question on how they can get rid of duplicate contacts in Windows Live Hotmail, so here is a post for all those readers, hope this helps you get rid of duplicate contacts in Windows Live Hotmail. As a bonus to our readers we will also be posting about how you can delete contacts in other Webmail Interfaces.

Windows Live Hotmail has improved over time and they have introduced several new features, getting rid of duplicate contacts being one of them. To delete duplicate contacts in Windows Live Hotmail, after you login to your webmail account, click on the Options link in the right hand side corner.

Once you have clicked on the link, a new page will load showing you lot of different options, scroll down until you see the Customize your contacts header and click on the Clean up duplicate contacts link.

Clicking on the link will load another page where you will see a description about cleaning duplicate contacts in Windows Live Hotmail and a button to start the process.

Once you have read the instructions click on the Clean up duplicate contacts button to start the process. Windows Live will fetch the duplicate contacts that exist in your address book, you can click on the contacts to see the details and delete the duplicate contacts or merge them into a single contact.

Using this simple process you can delete or merge all your contacts in Windows Live Hotmail. Hope this helps our readers to solve their problem.

Find Large Files and Folders On Your Hard drive with Disksum [Command Line Tool]

We have been big fans of Command Line tools, in the past we have talked about a command line tool to recycle your files using the command prompt, and also introduced you to several useful command prompt shortcuts.

We prefer using the command line for several tasks such as copying and moving files since its much more faster than the regular method available for Windows. Recently we came across Disksum, a handy command line tool, that will help you find the largest file or folder that exists in any directory on your hard drive.

Disksum can be used to find:
- Which folders have lots of files in them?
- Which folders use lots of storage?
To use disksum, download the executable and copy it to C:\Windows\System32 (replace C:\ with your Windows drive letter). Putting the file in the system32 folder will ensure that you can access the command globally, without having to provide the full path to the executable or adding classpath entries to your environment variables.

Once you have downloaded and copied the file into the system32 folder, open a command prompt and navigate to any directory you want to find the largest file or folder in and issue the command “disksum” without the quotes.

Disksum will scan the files and folders present in the directory and display it in two categories;
1. According to the number of files in ascending order.
2. According to size of the files and folders in ascending order.
Pretty cool right, and it’s quick too.

Three Essential Microsoft PowerToys

If you plan on sticking with Windows XP for as long as you can, there are a lot you can do to optimize it and better your XP experience. Even though a lot of us are guilty of not performing it, basic maintenance is essential. If you don’t already do so, you should run Disk Defragmenter (Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter) or another defragmentation tool on a regular basis. Not only will this speed up hard drive access times, but it will reduce the chances for data and operating system corruption. If you add regular anti-virus and anti-spyware scans to your maintenance regiment, you will keep XP running for longer periods of time without error. Performing maintenance is not all you can do to keep XP running optimally. Microsoft has also released some free tools that will help you use Windows XP more efficiently.

Microsoft’s SyncToy allows you to synchronize data between folders. This utility is easy to use, and it will allow you to quickly set up synchronization rules, and ensure that your data integrity is maintained while synchronizing. This is especially useful when synchronizing files between a flash drive (or external hard drive) and your desktop or laptop. It is easy to use and freely downloadable from Microsoft.

ClearType Tuner allows you to control how fonts are displayed within Windows. It allows you to better control how dark, crisp, and smooth fonts will be displayed on your system. After installing this application and running the setup routine, fonts are displayed much more clearly, kern better on screen, and I have experienced less eye fatigue. This free tool has really changed font management and display in Windows XP for the better.

Microsoft’s Image Resizer allows you to resize images without opening an image editing application. Once it is installed, it places a Resize Image option on the context menu when you right-click on an image. You can choose from 640×480, 800×600, 1024×768, or 240×320, and once you choose your desired size, the application makes a copy of the image in the desired size without changing the original image.

These are just a few of the free applications that Microsoft offers to enhance the Windows XP experience. They will save you a lot of time and money while allowing you to get the most out of Windows XP.

Search The Web From Within Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and More With Kallout

How many times have you been through situations where you are writing a important essay / document and want to quickly include a reference link for your research, or, you just received a meeting request from a client and want to quickly check the location of the meeting using a map?

These are some of the situations where you may have to open up a browser and either search for the definition or simply open your favorite map site and then search for the location included in the email.

Kallout is a very handy utility that will save you several trips between the browser and the application you are using, by providing you with a easy way to search for any highlighted keywords, or locations using popular search resources.

Kallout works with all Microsoft Office products, and can also be used while surfing web pages or while reading PDF files.

The search results are opened in a inline windows, so you can continue working with the current application while you comfortably search the web.
How to Use Kallout?
After you have downloaded and installed Kallout, it will create a icon in the system tray. Once Kallout has started up fully you can open any of the compatible application and double click or select any word or phrase.

On selection you will see a small Kallout icon, clicking on that will give you several options using which you can easily search for the phrase or words, without having to open a browser or leave your current application.

Convert, Print or View Thumbnails of Images from Context Menu [Useful Utility]

There may be several times when you may have downloaded, or received images through a email, now we can’t blame people for having preferences for using different formats for the images, but what if you want to convert them into your favorite format? What if you want to print a image without opening it?

Not everyone is a designer and resizing images could definitely take users a lot of time, also printing a image would require you to open up that image and then issue the print command. If you are hassled by these things, let us introduce you to a handy freeware utility that will ease your work when you work with images.

FirmTools ShellExtension is a real handy utility that allows you to convert a image to a different format. You can also configure which options should be displayed in the right click context menu, by using the configuration tool provided.

Convert Image Formats
Converting images is simple, you just need to right click on any particular image and then select the format you want to save it in. It takes less than 2 seconds to convert any image to any format.
Quick Thumbnails
The utility also shows a thumbnail of the image when you right click on it, making it easier to view the images in file/open save dialogs without having to see all the images in thumbnail view.

Clicking on the thumbnail will open the image in your favorite image viewer or editor.

Quickly Print Images

Cuil The Next Google Search Killer? Techie Buzz Verdict: No Way

Cuil also pronounced as “cool”, the latest search engine offering is making big news today with their launch, they claim to be indexing 120 billion documents which is 3 times more than the 40 billion documents Google Indexes. But why are people calling it a Google Search killer?

We strongly disagree with those who feel that way. Michael Arrington from Tech Crunch echoes our feelings with the blog post talking about how Google Beats Cuil hands down in size and relevance.

Cuil has a really large index but does that matter? How many of you get to the 100th page of the search result? As for getting search results for relevant terms, we do think that many of the results are identical on both the search engines. So does that mean 120 billion of documents are going to give you the same results that 40 billions of document can?

We are not defenders for Google here, but Google Search has been the center of everything we do, getting stuck with things is not in our dictionary and it is because of the search results we have found using Google search.
Relevancy - Winner Google Search
Many of the searches we did returned similar if not better results on few of them were outright different, but as far as relevance goes we rank Google more higher than Cuil. For example for the search term “technology” we got totally different results, but from relevance point Google won.

From the two search results you can see the drastic difference, and also how different the search terms are in relevance. It would also be worthwhile to know that Google indexed more than 1 billion pages which is almost 9 times more than what Cuil has indexed. You can click on the images above to visit the search results in the respective search engines.
Categories or Related Searches - Winner Google Search
Cuil does have categorization in place, but how relevant are they, let us look at the search results for the term “technology” once again.

Well the results say it all, and you already know our verdict.
Longer Search Terms – Winner Google Search
Cuil does not seem to understand longer search terms too, let us show you a example of a fairly simple query we ran on Cuil and Google, in the query we used the search terms “installing ngnix on Ubuntu hardy”. We rate this as a fairly simple search term since we have used much more complex search terms on Google over time. You wouldn’t be surprised by now to know who lost, it was the one who indexes 120 billion documents.

Though Google only returned 6 results, the first result solves our problem. Now we are just starting out with some of the simpler terms (according to us), there are several such terms which do not fetch any results on Cuil.
Interface – Winner Google Search
Don’t even get us started with the interface, we were really surprised they chose black, agreed they are pronounced cool, but with search we mean business not coolness. The black definitely takes our eyes off the main search results and focusing is a bit of a problem. On the other hand, Google sports a plain interface no jazziness or coolness, only relevant search results.

Though many of you may say that we have become used to the plain old interface, we would say yes we are, because we are only concerned about getting answers for our queries and not drooling over how good a search engine looks.
Summarizing
We won’t fall for the crap that it’s just launched, Cuil has been in the making for the past 2 years now, and that definitely is a long time to ponder upon several things we listed here.

If Cuil intends to poach users to start using their search engines, they will have to do much better job. We have nothing against the search engines, once they address the shortcomings we would be more than happy to give them a shot.

As a end user, we don’t really care what they do in the backend and how fast they index documents or how many documents they index, for us all that matters is the search results that answer our queries.

So the verdict from Techie Buzz for the new cool search engine is that, it’s in no way a Google search killer, in fact for us its not even in the competition.
