Mobile phones are becoming more and more sophisticated day by day, with storage space growing by leaps and bounds. Though the storage space have increase, the one thing that will never change is the importance of your data.

There may be many times when you could lose your phone and with that all your contacts and calendar entries. To avoid that it is always advisable to backup your contacts to a different location you can sync up with. So you could at-least get your contacts back in worst case scenarios.

There are various softwares and services which allow you to sync up your contacts, but we love two of them which are free and also very useful.
Mobical

Mobical is a mobile synchronization service that is based on SyncML. With Mobical you can backup your contacts, calendar entries, tasks, notes, SMS and bookmarks to a remote location, the service supports various mobile devices and can be easily setup on your mobile device.

Where Does Google Chrome Install Itself?

The first thing we thought about doing, while we were trying to run Java applets in Google Chrome was to drop the Safaris Java plugin into Google Chrome folder.

The problem we saw was that Google Chrome does not install itself into the default application directory “Program Files”, so we checked the properties of the exe file and found the location to be in the default user folder.

Where Does Google Chrome Install Itself?
In Windows XP Google Chrome will be installed in C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\ directory. In Windows Vista Google Chrome will be installed in C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\ directory.

Replace C: with the drive windows is installed in and UserName with the windows users you installed chrome with. We are not sure why they install in the Local App Data folder, and they do not provide any way to change the settings, while you are installing the software. You can easily uninstall Google Chrome through the control panel.

How To Run Java Applets Including Yahoo Games and Yahoo Chat in Google Chrome?

We have been playing around with Google Chrome for quite sometime now, the browser looks pretty good and you can read our first impressions about it. The one thing that we missed about Google Chrome is the inability to work with Java applets and with popular gaming sites like Yahoo Games.

Though that was only temporary since we found a way in which you can run java applets and games including those from Yahoo Games in Google Chrome.

By default the Java runtime only supports Internet Explorer and Firefox, in order to support Google Chrome (Google Chrome is based on Webkit which powers the Safari Browser) you will need to download the beta version of Java Runtime, which is compatible with Webkit and should support Java applets in Google Chrome.

So if you want to enjoy the games in the latest browser, download and install the beta version of JRE, link included at bottom of post. We could not get a snapshot of Yahoo Games since we are getting a 999 error from Yahoo, we will post screenshots of Yahoo Games in Google Chrome once the error is removed. If you want to run Java Applets on Google Chrome, download the JRE 6u10 for Windows and restart Google Chrome after installation. Once you have done that you can access all Java applets from Google Chrome, including the popular Yahoo Games and Yahoo Chat.

How to Start Private Browsing Session in Google Chrome?

Google Chrome adds in a feature called Incognito which allows users to browse websites without saving history on the computer, this feature is similar to the one available in Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2.

Opening a private or incognito session in Google Chrome is quite easy, you can either use the shortcut key Ctrl + Shift + N or choose the Open New incognito window from the menu.

The new window that opens up will not store any data to the search and browsing history.

How to Import Bookmarks / Favorites, Passwords, Search Engines and History from Firefox and IE into Google Chrome

Google Chrome is out and it is already making waves with its simplicity and ease of use. Read our first impressions about Google Chrome if you haven’t done it already. While we definitely see many people who would love to use Google Chrome, you can easily port your Firefox and Internet Explorer data to Google Chrome, including your bookmarks / favorites, passwords, search engines and history.

By default Google Chrome asks users if they want to import data from Firefox, but if you skipped it or want to import data from Internet Explorer into Google Chrome, here is a simple way on how you can do it.

In Google Chrome click on the settings button and click on Import bookmark & Settings option.

A new window will open showing you options to import data from Internet Explorer or Firefox, choose the browser and information you want to import and click on the Import button.

A new window should open showing you the progress of the import, once the import is complete the window will automatically close and your data will be available in Google Chrome.

How to Open / View .nfo Files

Many a times you may download softwares which contain a additional file with a .nfo extensions, by default such files are supposed to open with the Windows System Information, though most of the times you may receive a error saying, System information cannot open this NFO file.

The reason being that many of the NFO files distributed with softwares are usually text files containing information about the software authors and other data.
What is a .nfo File?
NFO files usually contain release information about a software program. They are commonly associated with warez groups who include them to declare credit of and "bragging rights" over said release. Similarly they are often found in demoscene productions, where the respective groups include them for credits, contact details, and the software requirements. – Wikipedia.
How to Open / View .nfo Files?
NFO files can be opened using either a text editor or a dedicated NFO viewer (not System Information). To open or view a .nfo file, you can download Damn NFO Viewer, using which you can easily open and view the information inside a .nfo file.

First Impressions: Google Chrome Rocks. It’s Super Fast And Feature Rich

Google Chrome is out for downloads and having been a early adopter, its already installed on our PC. The first thing we noticed about Google Chrome is that it is very lightweight and lightning fast, much better than any other browser available today.

We tried out Gmail on this box and it was really really fast, so was Google Reader, Facebook, twitter and other websites we regularly visit. Here are our first impressions about Google chrome
Clean Looking Interface
Google Chrome has a neat and simple looking interface which keeps your main focus on the browsing.

Lightweight and Lightning Fast
It’s been only 30 minutes since we are using Google Chrome, but we can say that Chrome is a lightweight browser and it is lightning fast as compared to other browsers such as Firefox, Opera and Safari.
Informative Start Page
Google borrows the start page feature from Opera speed dial, but it shows you thumbnails and links to site that you have visited from the history. It also displays the most recent bookmarks from the bookmarks folder and allows you to search your history. It also shows you links to the most recently close tabs.

Ability to create Standalone windows from tabs
Google Chrome allows you to easily create a standalone window from any tab, thus allowing you with the comfort to browse without being distracted by any other browsing session. Check out the image below to see how you can easily disconnect tabs into its own window.

Easy Rearrangement of tabs
e-arranging tabs in the order you want is very easy with Chrome, simply drag a tab and place it wherever you want, the graphical interface for managing tabs is quite good and works fast. Check out a image on how you can easily rearrange tabs in Google Chrome.

One Search Box Address Bar
The address bar allows you to search as you type, from both the bookmarks as well as from your browsing history.
Incognito: Browsing without saving history
Like IE8 Private Browsing, Google Chrome provides users with incognito browsing or ghost browsing, where pages viewed would not be stored in the browser or search history.

Create Applications Shortcuts / Launch Application in Chromeless Window
Google Chrome allows you to create application shortcuts to launch your favorite web application in a chromeless window, without address bar and toolbars. This feature is borrowed from Mozilla Prism, which allows you to launch web applications in standalone windows.
Summarizing
We still have a lot to explore with Google Chrome, but the first impressions are pretty good, browsing has been a pleasure so far. Though the features are not completely new, having all of them in a single browser does add more value to it. So if you are looking to try out Google Chrome, we would definitely recommend you to download it.

Fix for Mouse Not Moving To Secondary Monitor Issue on Windows Vista

This morning I had a very annoying issue with my dual monitor setup, where I could not move the mouse from one monitor to the other, I searched around online for fixes to the issue, but came across a barrier which asked me to update the display drivers for my video card.

My drivers were already up-to-date so I tried to connect the laptop to another external monitor and everything worked fine there. This totally frustrated me as I am used to working on a multi-monitor at the office.

I finally managed to fix the issue and it turned out to be the lamest thing I have every come across, Windows switched the extended monitor to the left and I was trying to move my mouse cursor from the right of my primary monitor. Though I am not sure what happened for it to change the settings, I was able to access the secondary monitor from the left.

So the next time your mouse cursor is not moving to the secondary monitor from the right side, try doing it from the left side of your primary monitor. I restored normalcy though to have Windows extend the monitor to the right side and here is how you can do it.

Open Control Panel and click on mobile PC, in the new page click on Windows Mobility Center. In the new window that opens up, click on the Connect Display button, a new window will open showing you the properties of the connected display, change the extend your desktop from left to right and things should work as normal.

Hopefully this should save you some headache, the next time you cannot move your mouse cursor to the secondary desktop.

We had been contemplating of launching a mobile version of the blog for quite long, but frankly could not spare much time installing and setting up plugins or having some custom code to run a mobile version. Our search for setting up a mobile version ended with MoFuse, which has lots of features and customizations that would make it easy for anyone to launch a mobile version with minimal efforts.

Monetization – If you think you would be losing revenue by hosting your mobile website with a third party, then you are slightly wrong here. MoFuse allows you to display Google AdSense and AdMob. Though there is a 50/50 sharing ratio between the publisher and MoFuse.

Google AdSense Maintenance Affects Earnings and Ad Views?

Update: We were able to access correct AdSense data at 11:55 PM Eastern Standard time.

Google AdSense had a scheduled maintenance for today, it seems like there may be discrepancies in Ad views and earnings for today.

We are quite sure that this has been caused by the recent maintenance schedule, as one of our fellow blogger Nirmal from Life Rocks tweeted about seeing a drop in the reports.

We have contacted Google AdSense team with regards with this issue and will update this post once we get a response from them. Are you seeing a drop in ad views and earnings today? Do let us know about it.

Microsoft Releases PhotoSynth
Microsoft unveiled their latest product (2 years in the making) called PhotoSynth to the public, this new application allows users to view images in a 3D format. Photosynth analyzes a set of photos of a place or an object for similarities each other, and uses that data to estimate where a photo was taken and build a model of the subject. It then re-creates the environment and uses that as a canvas on which to display the photos.

Microsoft is also offering 20GB free storage space to all its users, registration is free and open to general public.

Microsoft has once again opened up the UltimateSteal where students can buy Microsoft office at a 91% discount, yes at a cool price of $60, to be eligible you need to have a valid .edu id and be a student of a US education institution.

Nokia N96 Released

With the over hyped and under sold launch of iPhone in India, Nokia silently slipped the N96 into the market. The phone builds where it left on the N95 adding additional storage space, jacking up the built-in storage to a cool 16GB. Along with that they also added a memory card slot for additional storage, this missing feature was severely criticized in the N95.
Yahoo Connected TV
Yahoo announced the availability of Yahoo Connected TV in partnership with Intel. The new initiative from Yahoo, allows user to add widgets to their TV. TV Widgets are small Web applications that make it easy to surf your favorites sites with your remote control. Watch Web videos, track your favorite teams or stocks, interact with friends and family, and stay current on news and information by clicking on the compact, interactive apps that sit on top of your normal TV picture.

iPhone Doesn’t Even Sell 1000 Devices on Launch In India

Update: There are reports that iPhone sold 4000 units, and it may be a possibility that they sold it in combination of actual delivery and pre-ordering, we do not disagree, but we stand on our report. We have these numbers from a very reliable source.

Update: Cell phone companies never publicly said that iPhone lacks video camera capabilities, MMS, Bluetooth and only has a 2 Megapixel camera. Please contact your iPhone provider about it.

iPhone launched with much fanfare in India, but with no buyers, the top reason being the ill calculated pricing strategy in place. To top it people did not know that the phone did not have a video camera and are already complaining about it to the cell phone companies.

Going with the launches across India, it was not more than a dampener. To put it into perspective, the reception in a New York store would have beaten the reception iPhone got in the whole of the country, and they barely managed to snatch 1000 iPhones.
What Went Wrong?
Several things went wrong, like we told you earlier the pricing strategy was a big let down in a market that would not spend more than INR15000 ($350) for a phone, people who would have bought the phone would have been termed crazy if not Apple Fanboys.

To add to that fact, Apple doesn’t carry the feature many Indians rely to communicate, Multimedia messages are a done thing and iPhone does not have a feature that supports that, add to a fact that iPhone does not have video capabilities and also lacks Bluetooth.

This in lieu with the fact that India does not have a 3G plan in place yet, which would mean that users have to surf on a EDGE/GPRS connection along with having to foot a data plan bill that would be triple of a regular phone users bill, just to access the Internet on a limited bandwidth. If you are in US you could compare this with the first generation iPhones, which had problem with Internet connections.
Would It Be Good?
There is some news that the prices have been cut, though this seems to be a real desperate measure to get more buyers, given the mentality and lack of features, we definitely don’t see a hike in the sales figures in India. Alas the phone that sold in millions in the US, does not convert to a killer phone worldwide, there is Nokia (our favorite) to push Apple’s tails to a level where they can smell it, and right now they surely smell something bad there.

Firefox Announces Extension Contest Winners, And Our Favorites Are…

Firefox has announced the winners of the Extend Firefox contest where developers submitted Firefox extensions that would make life @Firefox more easier for users. The contest saw more than 100 entries being submitted and finally the winners were announced, here are the list of winners and our favorite picks from them.

Pencil a GUI prototyping and diagramming that everyone can use, Tagmarks for one click bookmark tagging and HandyTag a automatic bookmark tagging add-on won in the best new add-on category.

Read it later which saves pages of interest for later reading, TagSifter which lets you browse your bookmarks by their tags and Bookmarks Previews which adds a album view and thumbnail view to the bookmarks manager won in the Best Update add-on category.

And the best Music add-on goes to Fire.fm a add-on that provides direct access to the extensive music library on Last.fm, well there were no other contender in this category, but Ping.fm is really good.

Coming to the focal point, we have our own favorites among those who won, or came out as runners up, here are the extensions we loved from this batch of winners (and runner-ups).

Read it Later – Well this is a extension we love, why? Because there are sites we may not want to bookmark, and put off only till we find some time to catch up with, think about it as a sort of temporary bookmarks, totally love it, since we come across several great articles at work which we may want to read when we get home.

Close’n Forget – Though this plugin did not feature as a winner, for us this is a definite must have. Come on, the only (maybe) reason people clear cache and history is to avoid someone from seeing some sites they visited (for NSFW or other reasons), this extension allows you to do just that, though without clearing your entire cache, so you can open a tab, browse to your heart’s fill and close and forget everything about it, including cookies, cache and history too.

TagSifter – Why we love it, simply because looking at simple text in our bookmarks (1000s of those) does not make us know where this is from, having a previewing system definitely helps, when it comes to browsing those bookmarks.

Tagmarks – Who does not love tags, and for those who loves tags what would be much better than having a one click way of bookmarking them.

Fire.fm – Last is not always the least, and with Fire.fm we couldn’t find a more better way to use the phrase, this is probably one of the best add-on for music lovers, who want to hook up Last.fm content into Firefox, simply awesome.

How to Sign a Unsigned Symbian S60 Applications? [Nokia SmartPhones]

Many Nokia S60 applications are in beta stages and not signed. Installing a unsigned application on a S60 device is next to impossible. SymbianSigned.com did make the process of self signing application easier, but recently they have changed their requirements for signing applications, asking users to provide them with a publisher ID which is quite difficult to get your hands on.

There is a software though that will make signing unsigned applications a piece of cake.

GenialSiS is a desktop tool that will allow you to easily self-sign unsigned applications that are supported by SymbianSigned.com using Open Sign. All you require is the phone IMIE number and the unsigned application, here is a step by step tutorial for signing unsigned Symbian S60 app with GenialSiS.

GenialSiS runs out of the box, so you do not need to install it, download the file at the end of the post and unzip it to a folder.

Step 1: Find your Phone IMEI number – To do that type in *#06# in your phone and press Dial key, write down the number you see someplace, we will be using it in next steps.

Step 2: Fill in Information into GenialSiS - Open GenialSiS and go to the open signed tab, add a email address (this will be where confirmation emails are sent) and your IMEI number, once you have done that, click on the Open button and browse and include the unsigned application.

The application allows to sign more than one application at a time, but we suggest you sign only one application at a time.

Step 3: Sign the Application – After you have selected the unsigned application, and entered the email and IMEI, click on the Sign button. After you have clicked the button, GenialSiS will load the Open Signed page within the application and enter the details for you, you will have to confirm the captcha image before the application is submitted for signing to Symbian Signed.

Step 4: Confirmation of Submissions – Once you have entered the captcha code, wait for a few seconds, if everything goes ok, you should see a confirmation message from Symbian Signed, telling you about a email that was sent to you to confirm the signing process.

Note: You may see errors instead of a confirmation, if the application you tried to sign has errors or is not supported by Symbian Signed.

Step 5: Click on the Confirmation link in the Email – Login to the email you had provided while signing and check for a email sent by Symbian Signed, open up the email and click on the confirmation link, you should see a message that the application will be processed shortly.

Step 6: Wait for the second email from Symbian Signed – Once the application has been signed, Symbian signed will send you another email, open that email and click on the link provided to download the signed application.

Step 7: Install and Enjoy – Now that you have a signed application the S60 device will not complain about certificate errors and allow you to install the application.

We were able to self-sign and install the following application on our Nokia N95 smartphone using this trick: LandscapePro, RockNScroll, ShakeMe, FlipSilent, ShakeLock, Autolock, Calsync, rotateMe and FreeCallSprite.

Welcome to another episode of Friday fun, this week instead of showing you all the funny stuff we have been doing in the past, we will let you take the mantel and allow you to play some pranks on your friends, most of these softwares are pretty old but they are fun nonetheless, so go ahead take your pick and fool your friends.

The Mouse Trick – If you have access to your friend’s PC, give them some headache by switching the mouse buttons to function in reverse. To do that go to the control panel and select mouse, from the options you see for button configuration, check switch primary and secondary buttons, and watch your friend go crazy for a few minutes.

Vista Upgrade Prank – Simulates a Windows Vista upgrade, with full fledged bootup and login sequence. At the end it shows a Max OS X screen, definitely nice to drive a friend crazy. Download Vista Upgrade Prank.
